Only 22% of Waverly’s funding comes from property taxes. State funding provides 70% of funding for the district’s budget. By cutting our funding from the state over the past several years, Waverly is now facing a budget shortfall. Over the next two years the district will lose nearly $4 million in funding because of the state’s new funding laws.
This levy is expected to generate $2 million annually for five years and will pay for existing costs and day-to-day operating costs. The levy will not create new programs or new positions.
According to a recent staff audit Waverly is comparable to other districts in the area when it comes to administration. While these jobs are not in the classroom, they are vital to making sure our district is run efficiently. Just like any business needs administration to run, school districts need specially trained employees to make sure we are following state mandated programs, providing for the needs of our students, and maintaining our buildings and technology, as well as school oversight.
Only 2% of the budget is spent on athletics. Many of the things you see for our teams comes from private fundraising , donations, and support from the Waverly Athletic Boosters and Waverly Tiger Club. Those two groups do not receive any funding from the district and raise funds throughout the year to provide our student-athletes with opportunities. For example, over the past 10 years the Waverly Tiger Club has raised over $250,000 to spend equally on all our sports teams.
